Mr. Thomas G. Brown, editor and
publisher of the Ironton Republican, was born and raised on a
farm near Xenia, Ohio. His early education was received in the
country schools, and in 1870 he graduated from Xenia High
School. In 1874 he graduated from Cornell University.
The following four years he did special feature work for such
well-known newspaper publications as the Chicago Times, the
Des Moines Register, and the Cincinnati. Gazette.
In 1870 he was appointed postmaster at
Xenia by President Hayes, and received a second term
appointment under President Arthur in 1883. He afterward
bought an interest in the Springfield (Ohio) Republican, and
was its managing editor until 1889, when he came to Ironton and
bought the Weekly Republican. This publication was
established 18 years ago, and has since been the Republican organ.
Shortly after Mr. Brown assumed control he made the
publication a “Daily”, under his efficient management the Republican
has attained a proud position, perusing a policy that inspires
confidence in its reliability. No chances are taken in publishing
information on doubtful testimony, being bright but not sensational.
It is recognized as active and enterprising in behalf of public
welfare and just to all interest.
