Obituary of a Civil War Veteran
DEATH OF J. M. CLAY
John M. Clay, one of the pioneer residents of Lawrence township,
died at his home in Andis Thursday evening at 8 o’clock, aged 80
years. Old age, coupled with the effects of a severe fall sustained
during the winter, brought about his demise.
The deceased was a veteran of the civil war, having been an officer
in Company K, Fifth West Virginia Infantry. He is survived by the
following-named children: Lee and J. C. Clay, Mrs. David Griffith and
Miss Josie Clay of Andis, and M. G. Clay of West Virginia.
Few residents of this county had a wide acquaintance or stood
higher in the esteem of the community than John M. Clay, and the
announcement of his death will bring regret to many of his life long
friends.
The funeral services were held at Rock Camp at 10 a.
m. Saturday and were conducted by Rev. Andrew Plumb.
Ironton Register, 8 May 1902, Thursday.
