Obituary of a Civil War
Veteran
MR. FORBUSH
Formerly of This County Died in Huntington
At three o'clock yesterday
morning the death of John H. Forbush, aged 59, occurred at his home on
Fifth avenue, near Sixth street. The older inhabitants of this city
are well acquainted with this respected old gentleman. He was born in
Lawrence county, Ohio, and came to this city twenty-six years ago,
when Huntington was practically a village. Mr. Forbush was a staunch
old Republican, and one of his peculiar traits was, that after each
presidential election, at which a Republican was victorious, a large
cannon, his property, which is now stored in the John A. Jones
warehouse, was taken to the levee and fired off. He married Miss Mary
Louise Yates of Illinois, and ten children were born to the happy
union, seven of whom are now living. Several of them reside in this
city at the present time. For twenty-five years Mr. Forbush engaged in
the transfer business here. Since the death of Edward Forbush, his
oldest son, which occurred about eight months ago, Mr. Forbush's
health has rapidly failed him, and his demise which occurred yesterday
morning, has been expected for some time.
The funeral services were
held this morning at nine o'clock at the residence and Rev. Richard
Valentine conducted the services. The interment was at Spring Hill
cemetery. -- Huntington Herald.
