Obituary of a Civil War Veteran
WILLIAM HOOVER, ONE OF COUNTY'S THREE CIVIL WAR VETERANS, DIES
The ranks of Lawrence county's Civil War veterans were
reduced to two survivors today when William H. Hoover, formerly of
Ironton, died at the home of his son William in Shelby, Ohio. He went
there recently to reside.
Mr. Hoover's brother, David of Athalia, and Perry Brumfield
are the two living Civil War veterans remaining in Lawrence county.
Brief services for William Hoover will be conducted at Shelby
Friday at 1 p. m. and the body will be returned to Ironton by
Undertaker Phillips. Funeral services will be conducted in Oakland
Chapel Saturday at 2 p. m. with burial in Nelson cemetery. Military
honors will be paid.
Mr. Hoover penned his own obituary some months ago as follows:
William H. Hoover, son of Aaron Hoover and Delilah Hoover, was
born Nov. 3, 1847 in Morgan county, Ohio. He was reared in Washington
county, enlisted in the Civil War at Marietta Feb. ?4, 1865, and
served in Company D, 77th Ohio Regiment. He served under General Camby
at the siege of Spanish Fork and in the battle of Whistler Station and
participated in skirmishes at McIntosh Bluff in Illinois. He was sent
from Mobile over the Gulf of Mexico to Texas for service at Browne,
Texas. He wrote:
"I was taken ill and it was said at the hospital I would die
but by the mercy of God my life was spared to a good old age and I
thank God for his loving care. I came to Lawrence county in March,
1868, was married to Jemima Nelson Dec. 17, 1868, and to this union
five children were born. All are dead but two, Mary Hoover Betts of
Delaware, Ohio. William A. Hoover of Shelby, Ohio. Jemima Hoover died
May 8, 1878, and I was married to Hannah Christian Feb. 22, 1880, and
one child was born. Hannah Christian Hoover died in January, 1901. I
was married to Lutricia Bowen Dec. 9, 1904, and she died August 3,
1923. I was married to Rebecca Barnett Sept. 25, 1925 and she died
Nov. 16, 1930.
I will leave two children, 24 grandchildren, 36 great
grandchildren. My life work is almost ended. When I am taken away to
go home to Heaven, when all is joy, peace and love.
