Welcome Nance

Submitted by Kelley Greer

Welcome Nance was a son of Daniel Nance.  His obituary was published in the Ironton Register on May 6, 1909, and it was written as follows:

OBITUARY
DIED IN KANSAS
"Welcome Nance, a former Lawrence County man, died at his home in Atchison, Kansas, Sunday April 18th, at the ripe old age of 81 years.  His death was due to old age and a complication of ailments.

He is survived by a wife and seven grown children.  Mr. Nance was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, in May of 1828.  He went west in 1856 and settled on a farm near Atchison.  He was married to a Miss Snyder, who lived on an adjoining farm about two years later.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted when the first call for volunteers was made and served in his country's cause for three years.

Mr. Nance was a prominent member of the M.E. church, with which he united fifty years ago.  HE WAS AN UNCLE OF GEORGE W. NANCE OF THIS CITY, and will be remembered by many of the older residents of this country."

In the above obituary it is mentioned that Welcome Nance was an uncle of George W. Nance of Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH., in 1909.  The 1910 census of Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH., listed only one person named George W. Nance, and that was George William Nance, son of John Nance (and grandson of Daniel Nance).  This means that Welcome Nance was a brother of John Nance and both of them were sons of Daniel Nance and Lavina Kingery.

Welcome Nance was born in May of 1828 in Lawrence County, Ohio.  He died April 18, 1909, in Atchison, Atchison Co., Kansas.  He was buried in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Atchison.   He was married to Margaret A. Snyder in Kansas.  She was born in 1837 in Ohio and she survived him.  They had at least eight children together (Sarah, Mary Ellen, William, Eddie, Leuticia, Birtie, Charles A., and Edith).

During the Civil War Welcome Nance served as a Private in the Union Army in Company D of the 13th Kansas Infantry.  He filed for an Invalid Pension (Application #402,019 and Certificate # 256,533) on June 2, 1880. His widow, Margaret A. Nance, filed for a widow's pension (Application # 922,279 and Certificate # 678,087) from the State of Kansas on June 19, 1909.

Welcome Nance was recorded on the 1850 census of Lawrence Co., OH, in Windsor Twp., on page # 809.   He was recorded at that time as a 22 year old male laborer who was born in Ohio and he lived in the home of a widow named Margaret Mathew and her seven children.  He was obviously living and working at that time as a farm hand and this is why he was not listed in his parent's home on the 1850 census.

Welcome Nance was also recorded on the 1859 census of Shannon Twp., Atchison Co., Kansas and on the 1860 census of Atchison City, Shanon Twp., Atchison Co., Kansas on page # 73.  Welcome Nance was also recorded on the 1870 census of Oak Mile, Shannon Twp., Atchison Co., Kansas, on page # 19 and on the 1880 census of District 5, Shannon Precinct, Atchison Co., Kansas.

Delana Nance was the eldest child and daughter of Daniel Nance and Lavina Kingery.  Delana, or "Lana" as she was called, was born on October 27, 1814, in Buck Creek, Gallia County, Ohio. Today this area is located in Lawrence Co., OH.  She died in 1884 in Portersville, Lincoln Co., W.V., and she was buried next to her husband (who died in 1881) in the Curry Chapel Cemetery. It is located near Portersville, Lincoln Co., W.V., and it is approximately 5 miles N.W. of Hamlin, W.V.

Delana Nance was married to Reason Vermillion Powell on June 6, 1833, in Ironton, Mason Twp., Lawrence Co., Ohio.  Together they had at least eight children.  Their children were:
