Notes for Andrew Null:

Andrew enlisted at Ironton on 24 October 1862 for a period of 3 years and was paid an enlistment bounty of $25.00. At his enrollment with the service, he was described as 17 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches tall, brown eyes, dark complexion, and dark hair. On 8
February 1863 he was reported sick with a cold, sore throat, and pains in his side at the General Hospital No. 5 at Lexington, KY, after a forced march from Camp Dennison, OH, to Lexington. While in camp at Crab Orchard, KY, in March 1863, he contracted typhoid fever which resulted in trouble with his liver and rheumatism. His brother-in-law, Redman Lewis, reported later that while he was detailed as a nurse at the hospital, he remembered that Andrew Thomas’ hair all came out as a result of the disease which made him appear very bald. He was in the hospital for three months. He again reported sick on 19 June 1863 in the General Hospital at Camp Nelson near Hickman Bridge, KY. He was captured by Confederate guerrilla forces near Kearnstown or Moorefield, (W)VA, when the enemy shot his horse out from under him on 10 December 1864. This may have happened when Custer’s division (of which the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Calvary was a part) advanced on Moorefield to intercept a Confederate division. He was transported to Staunton, VA, then to the famous Libby Prison at Richmond, VA, where he was incarcerated from 20 December 1864 until his parole on 19 February 1865.Libby Prison was a converted tobacco warehouse owned by “Libby and Son, Ship Chandeliers and Grocers” which the Confederacy commandeered to house Federal prisoners-of-war. It was a brick structure, three—stories high, with many windows. It was near the Richmond waterfront and had a lower floor which opened onto the level of the waterfront. It contained eight rooms, each one 103’ by 42’ in size. Each room had a stove where prisoners cooked their rations. The conditions of the prison were awful -- the stench of foul air, bad water taken from the nearby canal, crowded rooms, filth an inch deep on the floors, and epidemics of scurvy and typhus. At times, there were not enough able-bodied prisoners to carry out and bury their comrades who had died. At one point, more than 1100 Federal prisoners were housed there.

Andrew Thomas Null’s experience at Libby Prison was also a difficult one. He carried scars on his wrists from bug bites he received in prison but was able to survive thanks to his mother, Margaret Null, who had sewed money in the lining of his pants. With this money he was able to escape the Scurvy and other diseases caused by malnutrition and starvation. A Black woman brought fresh vegetables and possibly bread; those prisoners with money could purchase the food and lift it up to their windows in baskets tied to heavy twine or their bedclothes. The prisoners thirst was relieved when, as if by miracle, a stream of water suddenly appeared in the prison yard. This may have been an old Artesian well which had been covered in earlier years.
 
Andrew Thomas was released from Libby Prison on 19 February 1865 and sent Camp Parole near Annapolis, MD, then to Camp Chase, near Columbus, OH. He arrived there 24 February 1865. He was furloughed for 30 days on 26 February 186.5 and then discharged from the service at Camp Chase on 7 June 1865.
