AMANDA
Boyd County, Kentucky
Built: 1829
By: LINDSEY POAGE & OTHERS
Ironton Register, July 24, 1856 - Amanda Furnace - This
valuable property in Kentucky, just above Ironton is offered at
auction by the Executors of the late A. Paull.
Ironton Register, August 13, 1857 - Amanda Furnace, a mile
above Ironton, on the Kentucky side, has been purchased of the
Executors of the late A. Paull, by E. Child and Geo. P. Rogers, our
fellow-citizens, and Geo. P. Walker, of Greenup Co. It has 5,500
acres of land, and the portion susceptible of cultivation is to be
surveyed immediately, divided into farms, and offered for sale. The
ore land, &c., will be reserved for the Furnace.
Ironton Register, July 14, 1864 - As previously announced
Amanda Furnace, Kentucky, opposite this place, was sold on last
Saturday, to the highest bidder, and knocked off to the Bellfont
Furnace Company at $35,200, which is a slight advance over the price
offered by Murdock & Co. some three months ago, viz: $28,500. - It
was supposed that the first sale consummated was final, but the
owners objected and made the sale void. Not being present we did not
learn the particulars of the bidding which was undoubtedly spirited
to run it up to that price.
Ironton Register, August 9, 1888 - George Miller, one of
our intelligent German citizens, worked at Amanda furnace when he
first came to this country. That was in 1853. Amanda seems such an
ancient place that it sounds singular for a man to talk about
working there. Ever since the present generation was on deck, Amanda
has been a deserted place. Mr. Miller worked there for a year or
more and then went to Belfont, where (NEED END OF ARTICLE)

PRINCESS
County, Kentucky
Built:
By:
Ironton Register, August 9, 1883 - From Ashland
Independent - We learn that the material of the Princess
Furnace, exclusive of the ore pile, has been sold for $10,000 to
parties who will remove it to a few miles beyond Lowmoor, Va., where
it will be set up again for the manufacture of iron. This furnace
and its predecessor, the Buena Vista, have been worked for a long
time with profit, but the company owning the lands have two other
furnaces near, which we suppose is sufficient to work up the
valuable ore, stone coal, and charcoal on the lands. The furnace is
located in a lovely and picturesque valley, where there is a white
sulphur spring, said to be of the same quality of water as that of
the celebrated White Sulphur Springs of Virginia; there are also
blue sulphur springs of great medicinal value near, and all the
conditions are favorable for making a fine watering place and
popular health resort.
There are good roads and drives to Ashland, Catlettsburg,
Coalton, and to the depot of the A. C. & I. and C. & O., which is
but one mile distant, and there are already several fine buildings
and cottages on the grounds, showing the good taste of W. W.
Culbertson when he ran the furnace, and the good workmanship of
Esquire G. W. Clere, his boss carpenter. There is a fortune in this
if an enterprising man should lease the property, and open it up to
the public.
