1870

The first bicycle ever in Ironton was in the Summer of 1870 - see 7/4/1895

3/31/70 - The coming fashion for gents is to be baggy trousers, brass buttons and swallow-tail coats.

3/31/70 - The City Council has suspended the operation of the broad tire ordinance, by resolution. Dam the Nile with a bulrush.

3/31/70 - Health officers reported two Small-pox cases in East Ironton.

3/31/70 - Tow Boat Bengal ran into a flat boat between Ironton and Ashland and sunk. Loss about $2,000.

3/31/70 - New Locomotive - In a few days the Iron Railroad will receive a new locomotive from the Pittsburgh Locomotive Works. It will be named the Howard, after the Howard furnace.

1875

8/19/75 - Another Military Company, the "Ironton Zouaves" is organized. Jacob Weddle, Captain; Evan W. Jones, 1st Lieut.; William J. Mulvey, 2nd Lieut.; Benj. Bentine has been chosen Orderly Sergeant. It will make a splendid company.

8/19/75 - THE NEW FAIRGROUNDS.

8/19/75 - Mr. S. B. Steece has purchased the interest of his former partner, Mr. Jas. Small, and likewise the entire establishment of W. H. Johnson & Co., and now runs two immense dry goods establishments, both of them fully stocked.

11/11/75 - Taxes in Ironton this year, average ten dollars to every man woman and child.. The people of Ironton will pay $75,000 taxes for purely local purposes, this year.

11/11/75 - The Etna Flour and Feed Mills of E. G. Wait are about completed and will be ready for grinding in a few days.

11/11/75 - Judge W. W. Johnson, of Ironton, has been spoken of as a member of the Supreme Court Commission. There is no man in Southern Ohio better qualified for so exalted a position. Ports. Republican.

11/11/75 - The Trustees of the Children’s Home wish to purchase property improved or unimproved, suitable for a Children’s Home. Proposals are invited. W. W. Johnson, Treasurer.

1878

10/24/78 - Susan B. Anthony lectures at the Baptist Church.

1880

12/20/80 - Ironton has 6 saloons for every church.

1887

11/17/87 - Crowell & Leicht’s saw mill.

11/17/87 - Rev. Moran begins pastorate at Presbyterian Church.

11/17/87 - Petition granted by County Commissioners for the incorporation of South Point.

11/17/87 - Knights Templar negotiated for 3rd floor over the Giant clothing store, for a lodge room.

1888

1888 - The ordinance to change the name of Olive Street to Park Avenue, was presented and the Council promptly suspended the rules and passed it by a unanimous vote. Petitioners asked that Sycamore-St. be opened from 4th to Front, and the name changed, in view of the existence of another Sycamore-st. in the West End.

1890

2/13/90 - Miss Sadie Johnson has been elected Matron of the Children Home to succeed Miss Zell, who has resigned.

1891

6/25/91 - An addition will be built to the house at the entrance to Woodland Cemetery.

6/25/91 - A new resolution to improve Sugar Alley between Mill and Vesuvius, has been passed.

6/25/91 - The improvement of Gold Alley contemplates a fire brick pavement laid in the form of a shallow gutter.

6/25-91 - Ben Davidson was in town Monday, to negotiate for the removal of the Court House to North Ke-South Point.

6/25/91 - The Public Grounds Committee reported that it would take $1500 to build a good riprap along the river bank to save Riverview park, and the Council thereupon appropriated $400 for the work.

6/25/91 - Mr. Jas. D. White, Manager of the Western Union Telegraph office in Ironton resigned effective July 1st.

8/6/91 - FIRST CLUB - The first McKinley club was organized in this county. The meeting was at the Courthouse.

1892

2/11/92 - Capt. W. E. Rowe is reelected as Superintendent of the County Infirmary.

2/11/92 - Col. Gray has bought the three acres of land just below the Ironton Fire Brick Co.’s factory, which formerly belonged to Mr. Neal.

4/7/92 - Hugh Willis says he remember the first steamboat whistle that sounded at South Point which was in 1844. It was that of a Cincinnati boat that blew to land at Catlettsburg.

4/7/92 - Spencer Chapel - A very interesting History of the old Church about to be torn down.

5/5/92 - Gen. W. H. Enochs renominated to Congress.

09/22/92 - Library rooms in the Memorial Hall, are ready for occupancy.

1895

6/6/95 - Said one Ironton lady to a little circle of her friends, "I am just not going to have any more dresses lined with hair cloth, it mashes down flat in a little while. I paid almost eight dollars for the linings of one dress, and it wasn’t lined with silk, either.

1906

I. R. Jan. 11, 1906 - Insurance Paid. - The insurance of $2000 on the Briggs Public Library, recently destroyed by the Memorial Hall fire, was paid Saturday in full.

The insurance was carried by the Hartford and Franklin Companies both represented by T. I. Collett of this city. The total loss on the library was about $4400.
