“List of Union Prisoners sent from Salisbury Prison in May 1862”

“There was an exchange of approximately 1500 POW’s in late May of 1862 which was before the Dix-Hill Cartel had been established on 22 July 1862.  Two hundred were shipped from the Salisbury Prison each day beginning on May 21 and continuing until May 28, excepting May 26 when none left.  The Bogue Island prisoners were sent out on the 28th and are separately alphabetized.  Each POW took the following oath before leaving Salisbury:

“The undersigned, prisoners of War to the Confederate States, solemnly swear, that if released they will not take up arms, during the existing war against the Confederate States unless regularly exchanged, and that they will not communicate in any manner whatever, anything that might injure the cause of the Confederate States, which may have come to their knowledge since capture.”

These prisoners left the port of Newbern, N.C. and arrived at New York on June 9.  On 10 June 1862, the Tribune [The NY Tribune, a newspaper] reported that the steamer “Guide” had brought “all the prisoners what were left at Salisbury, except the officers.”

Following is a list of the men of the 9th WV Infantry who were released from the Salisbury Prison as listed in the above referenced book.  Many of these men were from Ohio, some were from Lawrence County and a few were from Aid Township, including my great-grandfather, Henry Crawford.  Please be advised that there probably are some mis-spellings in the list but I have copied them exactly as they were written.
