Obituary of Celia A. Wolfe
Ironton Register, May 28, 1891
AN OLD CITIZEN'S DEATH.
---------------------------
Scott Town, Ohio; May25th 1891.
EDITOR REGISTER--On last Wednesday evening,
May 20th 1891, Celia A. Wolfe, one of the oldest and most
respected neighbors of this vicinity, died suddenly at the age of
85 years, she having been born in Virginia, Sept. 14 1806. Mrs.
Wolfe was the widow of George F. Wolfe, who died a few years ago
at the advanced age of 93 years. The writer became acquainted with
these people in the Spring of 1857, and they were considered old
folks then. The home of Mr. Wolfe, just across the creek from
Scott Town, was known throughout the county by the traveler as one
of the most hospitable homes in the county. Mr. Wolfe was wont to
entertain his friends and callers with a history of the early days
of "Old Virginia," and many a night the writer has listened and
urged him to tell of his younger days, until driven off to bed
under threat of being caned.
Six children survive these aged people, five of whom attended
her funeral at the beautiful cemetery near Locust Grove, where her
husband is buried. One son lives in Illinois and was not present.
A large number of grandchildren yet survive throughout this county
and vicinity, and also great grandchildren. The old landmarks are
passing away one by one, and with this family the head of one the
oldest families in Lawrence county, and perhaps one of the best
known families in the back portions of the county. Two sons of the
deceased served during the late war and yet survive. One of them,
Calvin P. Wolfe, lives at Ironton; the other in Illinois. The
father of these children, and husband of the deceased, served in
the war of 1812. Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe were the old time, kind
hearted hospitable people for which Virginians are well known, and
their home was always open to the traveler whether he had money or
was penniless. Sister Wolfe was a member of the M. E. church, and
though summoned suddenly, was prepared for the change that awaits
us all sooner or later. A. FRIEND.
