Peebles Park Find - Stone from Daniel Boone

Submitted by Martha J. Kounse

I.T. Thursday May, 1, 1902

D. L. Webb is cutting the timber at Peebles park.  This morning Mr. Cooper, one of his workmen, picked up a stone to throw out of the way.  He saw on the smooth side, letters and pictures.  He took it and cleaned it and found the words, "D. BOONE 1771".   Pictures of a dog, gun, and knife and several heads.  it is timeworn and part of the dog is worn away.  Mr. Cooper sold it to John Cuppett and it is now on exhibition in the show window of Ben Davis' clothing store, 127 West Second Street - Portsmouth Blade.
