A feature story in this newspaper Thursday told of the barbers of
New York trying to improve their image by calling themselves "Hairticians".
Why not? The ladies’ hops call themselves beauticians. Ironton barbers
years ago gave their shops fancy names like Classic, Favorite and
Opera.
The Adam Ehrlich shop on Third Street, now the Kresge location,
improved its image by decorating the walls with art calendars of local
business firms. The shop had a large glass window and the pictures
from the front could be seen from the sidewalk. Some of the "Gibson
Girl" pictures were very risqué and one year Mr. Ehrlich made the
mistake of tacking them up to near the front where they could be seen
from the sidewalk.
A delegation of ladies from the W.C.T.U. visited the mayor to file
a protest. One January the newspaper said, "more than 40 calendars
refreshed the walls at the shop and the barbers saw so many dates they
couldn’t decide to close shop on Washington’s birthday or Valentine
Day. Here’s to the 1966 Hairticians and their "beep-beep" razor
blades.
