If you were asked what you did on George Washington’s birthday 77
years ago, there aren’t many readers who could answer the question.
However, there is one lady I am sure remembers that holiday. Miss
Elizabeth Berg of 809 Vernon Street was an enthused young lady
that date in 1889 as the next morning school started for the first
time in the new Kingsbury building at Sixth and Vernon, a
building which was erected in 1964[?].
Teachers assigned the new school for the opening date were Mrs.
Sue B. Jones, Miss Berg, Nettie Alderman, Mattie G.
Price, Grace Sloan, Sara A. Rogers, Lizzie Klinefelter, Kate,
McGugin, Mary M. Fullweiler, Andrew Henry and E. M.
Jamison. Mount Stetson was principal. There are in the city
today perhaps more than 300 former students who were taught by Miss
Berg, since that date 77 years ago.
